3.61
3.87
3.95
Are automatic transmission ratios
3.52
3.79
4.11
4.39
Are the only manual transmission ratios ever put in a Metro. XFI's have the same 3.79 gear ratio as newer four cylinders. There was never a 3.85 or a 3.95 manual transmission Metro, at least not in the states. Maybe they're G16 or AWD ratios, both of those transmissions are a different animal from the standard Metro transmission.

I'm so happy to find this site, I've been fighting this incorrect information for years, now I see where it's coming from.

You list the XFi with 3.85 gearing.... but I see most other websites givng the XFi trany the 3.79 ratio.... so which is correct ???

Also in the nice chart with info about teeth to count on the crown wheel... no mention of the 3.85 ??? And I notice the number of teeth go down in number along with the ratio except the first two ratios 3.52:1 74...... 3.79:1 72 are backwards. Please confrim as this info looks to be very helpful.

Anyone ever make a list of the codes on the transmissions of XFi cars ? My 91 has a Z52 code in paper on the trans. Thanks.

I have a '95 three cylinder. Manufactured in May 1995. I'm overhauling the engine (currently at the machine shop). The tranny leaks fluid, so I thought I'd overhaul that as well. Before beginning work on the engine, I clocked my rpms to velocity. 3000 rpm = 57 mph, clocked against my GPS.

I have the worst case scenario. 79 teeth on my crown wheel. Crap!! The good news is that any tranny I can find will be an improvement.

Kimer, before getting too worked up over the fianl drive ratio in the trans, there's and EASY way to figure out what you have by just veiwing throught the trans fillplug hole. All you need is brake Kleen, a flashlight, a paint stick. Remove the fillplug near the driver's side axle, spray with brake Kleen so the paint stick sticks, mark a tooth, while turning an axle you count teeth. Then you just match up your findings with the chart, below... check out this perfect link for the details, it is right up your alley (I cut-n-pasted from that link) It will also help you find another trans.
